Green Oak Garden Room
Our latest garden room project was a really satisfying job having designed, fabricated and then built it using a blend of traditional green oak construction techniques and then incorporating modern double glazed units.

All the green oak was sawn to size and sanded to give a more rustic look rather than a smooth planed finish - 150x150mm square corner posts, 100x150mm mullions were all rebated 15x40mm to take 4:20:4 28mm Clear K-glass, toughened units and glass bead.
The frames were set out, machined and fitted in the workshop and then taken back to the site.
Sand and cement was used to bed the base plate onto the dwarf wall, then each piece was carefully constructed using polyurethane glue and oak drawer pegs - this process was repeated throughout the construction.
5 star woodworm treatmant was applied to all the green oak and left to soak. 50% meths mixed with 50% boiled linseed was then used to seal the oak and give a rich golden colour as seen in the photos.

175x175mm green oak was used for the trusses with the base of these trusses measuring 6.5m long.
These were all built on site and all mortice holes were drilled with a 25mm auger bit in an electric drill twice making it 50mm wide and squared up with a chisel. The tenons were cut by hand saw.

The 3 trusses were lifted into place by a JCB Loadall with each truss weighing approx 750kg.

Rafters were completed and trimmed out to fit 2 velux roof lights.
Roof construction: 75x100 rafter,75mm foil tape,6mm MDF,12x75mm plywood counter battens,50mm kingspan insulation,25x50mm counter battens,19x38 roof laths and reclaimed tiles.
6mm MDF was painted white before fitted and fixed on top of the rafters to leave all the rafters exposed rather than plastering in between.

The completed garden room is used as a light and airy breakfast room for a local bed and breakfast.

Unsurprisingly, this has become the most popular room in the house and tour clients are finding it very hard to get their guests out in the morning!
